The time and the place of Impruneta terracotta

Impruneta terracotta is age-old, but officially it is 700 years old.
Its birthday has been exactly on March 23rd, 2009.

In fact the notarial act, kept at the Florence State Archives, which documents the foundation of the guild of the Impruneta kiln men dates back precisely to that day in 1309.

To celebrate this anniversary, the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, together with the Municipality of Impruneta and the Basilica of Santa Maria, are sponsoring this vast and spectacular project to promote the territory, the main event of which is the exhibition, The Impruneta Art of Terracotta. Renaissance Masters and Today’s Kilns, which showcases important sculptures as well as ancient and modern artefacts.

Jars, pitchers, pots, roofing tiles and bricks are characteristic of the Tuscan civilization and are still today the principal artisanal and industrial activity of Impruneta.
